Part 2 of a 3 part adventure.
We have stayed at Sunset Caravan Park in Woopi (local nicname for Woolgoolga) for 6 months. Over the Christmas period they kick the long term caravan residents out to make way to charge exhorbitant amounts to the holiday makers. That didn't bother us too much as we needed the break and it also helped us to save money on our weekly rental fees for 5 weeks.
If you have stumbled on this page, there are links at the bottom to Parts 1 & 3.
So we headed south of Coffs Harbour back to Kinchela and now to Kempsey.

KEMPSEY
~~oOo~~
Further to my previous page where the farmer wanted to charge us $30 a night to stay in his cow paddock amongst the long grass, we paid him for just 1 week instead of 3 and moved south to the Kempsey Showgrounds where we paid the same price and had power and water included. That is what happens to HipCampers that become a bit greedy.
So here we are at the showgrounds where you can stay up to 21 days non-peak and peak is up to 14 days which suited us well. The showgrounds are well looked after with plenty of space in between sites and the gates are closed each night to make us feel safe. You can get in and out with a passcode. Picture is complements of Kempsey Showgrounds site as I forgot to take a photo.
Kempsey really does not have much going for it except for all of the usual major outlets of a regional centre. The Information Centre is a little out of town to the south and is quite large including a great little cafe. It is the home of Slim Dusty so has a lot of memorabilia on Slim. Well worth a look.
We also found a wonderful little cafe on the banks of the river called The Pantry and enjoyed brunch here.

BELLBROOK

~~oOo~~
Located in the hinterland from Kempsey, Bellbrook is a cute little town. Blink and you'd miss it.
However it has a wonderful Tavern overlooking the valley and river. The ribs we shared were to die for! Looks like they also have regular entertainment here as well, going on the large grassed area and entertainment gazebo.
We liked this place so much that we came back again and also went down to the creek and checked out the rocks for our rock tumbler. We met some local indigenous kids and had a chat. I also had a play with my macro art lens and the fungi on the wooden posts.
Check out the awesome dumpster mailbox we saw along the way. 😃
FREDERICKTON
Frederickton, just north of Kempsey and before the highway is foodie heaven. This is another vey small town but packs a punch for a selection of eateries from the cute Fredo Pie shop to the great Pub on the corner and The Garden Bar & Restaurant.
We enjoyed the ambience and food at the Garden Restaurant so much that we came back again. If deciding to visit, you will need to book as it is very popular, and no wonder why. The restaurant is run by a family. We were served by Ezra, a lovely young lad who took the time to make us feel comfortable and have a nice friendly chat. His brother, at the bar, made me a great lemoncello cocktail that was a bit like a martini. The hommus beatroot dip and flat bread was devine, wild mushroom arancini - yuuum, and red emperor fillets totally delicious, plus the Burrata cheese, tomatoes, nectarine dish was amazing. And not to mention, we shared a desert that blew our minds! I am not a desert person, but loved every mouthful! All in all, if you like the tappas concept with plenty to choose from on the menu, then the Garden Bar & Restaurant is the place for a lovely long lunch.
Fredo Pie shop has won verious awards over the years so we had to visit. My pepper pie was juicy and delicious. Hubby wasn't really impressed with his. So it was a half and half experience.
We dropped into the pub on the way back from the hinterland for a coldie. They were without a cook for lunch but told everyone that the cafe across the road (The Hungry Puku, which btw also has great reviews) is willing to make take-aways for whomever wants to bring back to the pub with them whilst they enjoy their drinks here. Now that is good old country caring and sharing if you ask me.
