We have now
stayed in a few Station Stays so we had something to compare them by. Each one has something unique to share with
us travellers. Nalbarra has breakaway
country and magnificent wildflowers, Gabyon has more wildflowers, warm
hospitality and an awesome pizza & pumpkin soup dinner night, Giralia was a
huge station that had it’s own bay in the Exmouth gulf. It also had the best firepit nights and quirky
toilets and showers with a bush view. We
had just come from Emu Creek Station where we camped beside the billabong with
it’s huge white gums and amazing birdlife.
Good swimming too.
Now it was
time to experience Cheela Plains Station.
This is another huge Cattle Station located just off the highway between
Nanutarra and Paraburdoo. In fact it was
around 90k’s either way.
When we
arrived, I was not at all happy that the site that hubby booked was was going
to cost $50 a night. That’s a lot for a
Station Stay. So I gave hubby a little
lesson in asking about the price before booking and a please don’t do that
again. I would have much rather gone for
the $30 non-powered site. I wondered
what unique experience Cheela was going to offer us.

PARABURDOO
As I said
before, it was going to take us an hour to get into town, but we needed some
supplies. Paraburdoo is a relatively new
town, having been built predominantly for the miners. We were surprised to see so much greenery in
town. They must use a ton of underground
water on the lush green grass everywhere.
Yes, water is drawn from underground here.
That being
said, we both liked the feel of Paraburdoo.
Although small, it has quite a lot going for it. The IGA is huge and has all sorts of stuff
including camping equipment. We were
surprised to see the Exmouth Seafood Truck here. Hubby went over and yep, it was the same dude
that we bought seafood from when we were way down south at Corrigin. We promised that we were not following him 😊
Paraburdoo
also has Big things. We saw the Big
Truck and a Big Round Wheel made by the locals of the Men’s Shed. Btw, we have noticed that most towns have a
Men’s Shed. This is a community based not for profit programme that is designed to assist men and their mental health. Very good idea.

Back at
Cheela, the sunset was pretty good and it was full moon, so I got some good
shots both nights of that, both different.
They had a pretty cool sign to that everyone took photos of at
sunset.
Second
night we had some entertainment from a traveller. He was real good too. That made everyone come out and gather at the
firepit. The previous night it was
pretty much just hubby and I. We
thought, gee… what a bunch of
hoity-toity snobs lol.

Anyway, as
I said from the outset, each Station Stay had it’s own unique experience to
share with us travellers. Cheela Plains
gave us a mud map and gate key and told us to check out the gorges and
waterholes up the road on their station.
What a day!
Sorry to
bore you with a ton of photos, but this is what we saw! Just a taste of what we will surely see at
Karijini I hope.
Yes, Cheela
Plains Station is well worth a stay.
Just make sure you book a non-powered site. 😉
