WYANDRA
~~oOo~~
Wyandra is a quirky little town and worth a stop between Charleville and Cunnamulla.
We rolled up to the Pub and had a coldie and chatted to the Pub owner Simon who has just purchased the Pub and is slowly doing it up. He was currently renovating the kitchen and said that it will be open for businesss in the next couple of weeks. We were pleased to hear that the Council was very much interested in how it was all going and was definitely backing Simon in his project which is a good thing.
As we were hungry, we wished Simon the best and strolled down the road for a bite to eat.
There are only two things in town, the Pub and an interesting Post Office come Caravan Park, come Cafe. This Post Office had an eclectic and bizzare mixture of stuff for sale bordering junk. I found it interesting and noval to walk round. You can see from one of the signs below that they sell Choo Choo Bars which are one of my old time favourites and Golly Wogs, something these days you cannot say! My mother used to make Golly Wogs and in fact I started a secret girls club at primary school called the Golly Wog Club. We were innocent in those days to the fact that this might have had another not so nice connentation.
CUNNAMULLA
~~oOo~~
There's not much in Cunnamulla. It's another outback town that is slowly dying. There were no Banks nor ATM machines. Just one at the Pub that costs to take money out.
The lady at the Information Centre was friendly and informative. She even phoned Bowra Sanctuary for us who confirmed that the road was still closed due to the floods.
Cunnamulla is home of the big Cunnamulla Fella who depicts young stockmen who came to work with the cattle. These young men worked hard from sun up to sun down and when they finished a hard days work, they all squatted like this around the camp fire and shared their stories. Stan Coster wrote the Cunnamulla Fella song and Slim Dusy made it a hit.
We stopped to buy some groceries from the IGA and found the shelves nearly empty. I remembered that there was another grocery shop closer to our Caravan Park, the Friendly Grocer. This shop was much better, well stocked and the prices were good. Across the road was something that looked interesting. We came across the Robbers Tree.
The Robbers Tree was was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. This was the place that in 1880 a fella by the name of Joseph Wells climbed to hide after robbing the Bank. He was the last person sentenced to death for this type of felon.
RFDS OUTBACK CAR RALLY
~~oOo~~
The Royal Flying Doctors Service Outback Car Rally just so happened to be in town 1 June 2025.
Cunnamulla was swarming with cool and unusual cars all raising money for the Royal flying Doctors.
The most unique cars were the Dogs. There were three cars dressed up as dogs. The big one was covered in hair and and was playing Who Let the Dogs Out loudly. So much fun.
😃
We also saw the Dodgy Brothers and an old EH Holden.
WARREGO RIVERSIDE CARAVAN PARK
~~oOo~~
Again I had chosen a nice caravan park. This one was 4 k's out of town on the river. These caravan parks in outback towns have been a pleasure to stay in. Most have level drive through sites, friendly staff and happy hour every evening around the camp fire. The hedges that separated the drive through sites here were lovely and bushy which made for good privacy.
We enjoyed our stay here at Warrego Riverside Caravan Park.
We have loved the entertainment too wherever we stayed. Here they had a nice fella playing guitar and singing country music songs. Check out the short video below.
ROAD TO CUNNAMULLA
~~oOo~~
You can see here the after affects of the rain. These roads out here weeks later still have the remnants of recent major flooding in the area.
Scenery here also changes as you can see below.
