WONGA BEACH

~~oOo~~

Far North Queensland and Crocodile Country.  We decided not to paddle here.

🐊

Well that didn't matter as I chose a Caravan Park with a pool.  😎

Daintree Beach Resort Caravan Park is located at Wonga Beach, in between Mossman and Daintree.  At just $42 a night, this place had all the mod-cons of a resort.  The pool, complete with water flowing off the rocks was lovely, the facilities were super clean and decor better than most real resorts that we have stayed at, they had a licenced food van and outdoor comfortable seating including bean bags of an evening, beautiful bush surroundings and manacured lawns and gardens, accommodation in a train and glamping.  Check it out, here.

I chose this Caravan Park as it is centrally located to check out the Daintree, Cape Tribulation and Mossman Gorge.  The only down side is that to get here, we had to take the road from Mount Molloy, through Julatten and down to Mossman.  Going down the twisty mountain road to Mossman was the hairy bit.  I wasn't looking forward to going back up as we had to back track to Mount Molloy and through Mareeba to continue our journey down through Queensland on the Great Inland Highway.

We are pleased to advise that we made it both ways in one piece.  The friendly staff at the resort confirmed that we were choosing the best way as the road up through Kuranda is worse.  I forgot about that.

We were greeted every evening by the resident Bush Stone Curlews.  They were very cute.  They are a nocturnal ground walking bird with beautiful defined eyes.  They have a distinct sound and can be quite loud.  You can listen to them, here.

Lastly, just a couple of photos of the glorious sunset, beach and path to the beach.

CAPE TRIBULATION

~~oOo~~

What do we think of Cape Trib?  Nothing but a few beaches, rainforest, board-walks and in short, a money suckin' day out.  Our day visiting Mossman Gorge was way better.  More about that later.

The last time I visited here was with my good friend Dorrise from Cairns on a 7 day road trip through Mareeba, Cooktown and Daintree in 2014.  It wasn't expensive then.

There is only one way to get to Cape Trib, and that is across via ferry.  And guess what?  Return ticket is now $49.  I gladly accepted my dollar change.

Next, we drove through the thick  rainforest complete with lots of road works where landslides had taken half the road as a result of Cyclone Jasper in 2023.  Cape Tribulation was completly cut off at the time and recovery road works are still underway.  They had blue header cars that we had to follow past the roadworks points to keep the traffic flowing.

Anyway, we arrived at the Daintree Discovery Centre where we were hoping to obtain a map of things to do.  They explained what we could see there complete with tree-top canope walk and interactive displays along the way.  At the end of his speel, the fella said, cost is over $40 each.  My jaw dropped.  Yeh?.... No!

I busied myself checking out the trinkets instead.  I wasn't going to dispence with any more of my hard earned savings after paying almost $50 to get here.  At this point, I was glad that I had made us a picnic lunch.  😅

CAPE TRIBULATION BEACH

~~oOo~~

Prestine Beaches as they say?  Where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef?  Mmmmm.  Yes, nice... however, we saw way better at Mission Beach and better still, it was free!

We drove as far as we could to Cape Tribulation and the start of the Bloomfield Track which is 4x4 only and takes you through to Wujal Wujal and Cooktown.  We saw the other end of the Bloomfield Track at Wujal Wujal.  See my page, here.

Whilst hubby took Tookie in his backpack up the beach, I busied myself photographing swamp reflections and fungi.

KULKI BOARDWALK

~~oOo~~

Hubby did the boardwalk to the beach.  I just did a little bit as I was more interested in taking shots of the pretty trees and fungi.

THORNTON BEACH

~~oOo~~

Easily the prettiest beach here.  We stopped for a look and had our picnic.

DAINTREE

~~oOo~~

I have been here three times now.  Once in 2009 when hubby and I came up here with Zig, a good friend from Noonamah near Darwin just before we hit the Savannah Way from Cairns to Darwin across the Top End of Australia.  You can read all about that trip, here.

Daintree Village hasn't changed.  Same, same.

We had a beer at the Daintree Hotel and chased the Ulysses butterflies around the flowers wishing for that fabulous photo.  Yeh.... No.  Check out my poor efforts below and video at the end of this page.

You've gotta laugh at the last photo, lol.
Well at least I shot him good and got the beautiful blue colour,....
even if he was flying upside down.

MOSSMAN GORGE

~~oOo~~

As I said before, Mossman Gorge was by far one of our Big Lap highlights.  Ok, it cost $15 each, to which I normally feel should not be charged to see nature.  But understandably the charge was for our bus ride up to the gorge which in itself is environmentally friendly, not having cars going in and out.  Plus the cost would obviously go to the upkeep of the walking tracks and hanging bridge etc, which were in very good condition.  In addition, you actually didn't have to pay the cost, but you would be walking up to the gorge, which is not an easy walk.  That being said, $15 I am ok with.

The water was super cold, and one of the freshest, cleanest, mountain stream dips I have ever experienced.  Plus it is a gorgeous green colour.  Absolutely stunning!

Hubby continued on the walk up to the top.  I was happy to take some macro shots, go for a swim, sit in the shade and people watch.

The last few photos are taken with my art Lensbaby Lens, the Soft Focus ii and the whirlpool drop-in creative aparture disc that produces interesting bokkah.

CLUB MOSSMAN

~~oOo~~

We enjoyed our first meal here so we came back again.  The prices were reasonable and the food cooked fresh and tasty.  Their oysters kilpatrick were scrumptous.

RANDOM PHOTOS

Just after Mossman, the road is very close to the beach.  I remembered this from the previous times we visited.  There is nowhere to park so I managed to grab a photo.  Not real good, but it gives you an idea.

This side of Daintree Village we came across a few random bus stops.  Seems like they were in the middle of nowhere.  There must have been a house tucked in there somewhere, but we couldn't see it.
😕
