Yummy brunch. More about that later.

We could
have stayed at the free camp at the Turf Club in Port Hedland which was central
to the small shopping centre and Hedland Hotel however we needed to get some
washing done and because we were finally at a beachside city, I chose to stay
at the caravan park near the beach.
Port
Hedland itself is small. All the major
outlets and services are located in the neighbouring town of South Hedland.
Port Hedland Discovery Caravan Park was just the place we needed after being in the bush for a while. I could smell the beach well before we got there. Nothing like the smell of the surf 😊
We loved our daily afternoon swim in the little pool here. It is well looked after, has lots of shade and is just the right size for a medium sized caravan park. The amenities were good as well. The only con was that they only had 2 washing machines and one of them was old and marked for workers clothes. Not anywhere near enough for a park of this size.

We have got
into the habit of heading for the Tourist Information Centre when we arrive in
places now. It usually has parking
available nearby for rigs and we can avail ourselves of some info at the same
time. So we found the Information Centre
and checked out the direction to the Caravan Park. Hubby purchased a t-shirt and sticker and I got
a glove set for the camp oven and a cute little fork set for oysters that I
hope will come in handy soon 😊

That
accomplished, we decided to grab some brunch before heading to the Caravan
Park. We found a great little café made
from a couple of old train carriages.
Silver Star Café is located in the small street beside the Info Centre
and in a lovely tree shaded spot.
I had a nice
breakfast bruschetta and the best caramel flavoured coffee that I have ever
tasted.
Needless to
say, I totally recommend the Silver Star Café if you plan to visit Port
Hedland.

We had dinner at Hedland Hotel up the road from the Caravan Park. Sunset view was nice across the beach however the food let them down. I ordered the chicken schnitty and a parmajana came out which was dry and the salad had little or no dressing on. Reading the recent reviews indicates the same. Food is not good. Must be a new chef as the previous reviews were good.
Anyway, that is the chance you take right? 😏

If you are following my blog you would have read my previous Karijini and In The Rocks free camp that we stayed at on the way here to Port Hedland. That road is inundated with road trains constantly going to and from the mines taking iron ore to Port Hedland.
Near town
there are huge rail sidings and extremely long iron ore trains coming and
going. We were blown away by the amount
of empty space with the major highway in the middle and huge over-rail bridges
everywhere. Nearby is a big salt mine
that is owned by Rio Tinto.
Interesting. So Rio Tinto is
branching out into all sorts of mining.
